What to Expect After Varicose Veins Treatment

Although nonsurgical laser treatment for varicose veins has a much shorter and easier recovery time than traditional surgery, it is still important to follow proper aftercare protocols. If you are scheduled for varicose veins treatment, you probably have a lot of questions about what to expect. Here is what you should know.

Recovery Time

You will be encouraged to start walking around immediately after your procedure and to resume basic activities the day of your procedure or the next day. However, you will likely have some mild soreness and bruising for about five days, and your body needs time to heal before engaging in vigorous activities. We recommend talking to your doctor at your follow-up appointment, which will be about a week after your procedure before you resume strenuous activities.

Aftercare

Unless contraindicated, you can treat soreness with an over the counter pain reliever such as ibuprofen. You can shower right away. Wear compression stockings for at least three days, or up to a week if directed by your doctor. They will encourage blood flow, reducing swelling and pain.

Until you are fully recovered, avoid sitting or standing for too long at a time. It is better to regularly switch between the two, and to walk as much as you comfortably can. Be careful not to overdo it, though. If you are not used to walking, start with a few hundred yards and gradually increase the distance. It is far better to take lots of little walks than to walk too far right off the bat and set back your recovery.

Possible Complications

The risks from nonsurgical laser treatment are quite low, but any medical procedure carries a small chance of complications. Risks associated with this procedure include:

  •         Skin burns
  •         Skin discoloration
  •         Nerve damage
  •         Blood clots

We will tell you exactly what to look for, and what you should do if you notice specific signs of a problem. For the vast majority of patients, though, recovering from laser treatment for varicose veins is quite simple and uneventful. We encourage you to reach out if you have any questions, and to enjoy life without painful and unsightly varicose veins!
